Powers permission
(Note: With or without his powers, Orpheus' music is phenomenally good. If your character has any sort of appreciation for music, they should be able to tell that he is just...really, really amazingly good. That much is just talent. What his music can do on top of that is open to interpretation.)
Orpheus' powers are related either to his music, his mother, or his relationship to Apollo.
On the music side:
- he can use his music to move inanimate objects. Really big ones if he's really trying. (Rivers and trees and that kind of thing.) It's a little easier for him to move objects made of natural materials than synthetics. Essentially his music touches the soul directly, and the Greeks believed everything has animas, a soul.
- his music can mimic physical sensations.
- his music can affect people's emotions. He can pull out any emotion they are capable of feeling. He cannot make them feel something that they have absolutely no inclination toward.
- related to the above: he's a bit of an empath. He doesn't do it on purpose often, but he can read people's emotions. Usually he just translate this into playing whatever sort of music it is they need to hear just then.
- it takes him about 5 minutes with a new instrument to play it like a master. (Though he always prefers his guitar.)
On his mother's side:
- he's really, really good with languages. After hearing it spoken for a short while, he can speak it himself, flawlessly, though there is always a very faint, vaguely Mediterranean accent when he speaks.
On Apollo's side:
- as a sort of extension of his musical powers, he can heal minor injuries, wounds, and sicknesses with his music.
- he has accelerated healing. He also cannot be killed. This is actually a result of having been brought back to life by Zeus, but he just...can't. There have been many attempts.
- he has a small but incredibly accurate gift of prophecy. He can't see his own future, but he occasionally gets glimpses of others, and he can tell fortunes if asked. Accurately. Whether they want it or not. He won't lie.
- his guitar (originally a lyre he was given by Apollo) can take the form of whatever musical instrument he needs. It's almost always a guitar, but occasionally it's something easier to carry around. It always looks like it's probably made out of gold.
I will never have Orpheus' music or abilities affect your character without permission, but if you would particularly like to play with his powers or would particularly not like to, please let me know here! In general, I will include what his music should be doing in the narrative, but you are free to have it affect or not affect your character as you see fit. I'm a big fan of "different worlds, different rules" when it comes to this.
As far as his prophetic/empathic gifts go, I may ask sometimes what your character is feeling and if you are comfortable with Orpheus picking this up. I will generally not use his prophecy unless asked to do so or if it is something we've worked out in advance.
