[Milliways]: New York, New York

Orpheus wasn't entirely sure the ring would work as a way for him to get to Steve's world, but he was going to give it a shot. If it didn't work, he'd explain it to Steve the next time they were both in the bar, and they could figure something else out.

His guitar slung across his back, Orpheus turns the ring on his finger and opens the door, pleased to find himself in Steve's apartment when he steps through.

"I know. It's awful. I suppose I'm a homebody at heart."

Orpheus smiles and kisses him sweetly. "Let's go get takeout."

"Okay," says Steve with a soft laugh. He takes Orpheus's hand and leaves the line.

Orpheus laughs along with him as they leave.

"Are you sure you're okay with this?" Steve says as they walk. "I feel like I keep changing plans on you."

[golden_lyre]

He smiles and bumps Steve's shoulder with his. "I came here only to be with you. Nothing more. There will be time for seeing the city later if you want or if I want."

Steve kisses his cheek. "Especially if you're going to live here," he says, beaming. "You'll get to know the place like a native."

[golden_lyre]

"I have lived here once or twice," Orpheus points out. "At least in my world."

Steve teases, "When it was still New Amsterdam, or before that?"

[golden_lyre]

He laughs. "Once in New Amsterdam. A few times much later."

[thekidfrombrooklyn]

"I bet it's changed some."

They turn a corner and Steve goes quiet. There's visible damage to the buildings around them behind Under Construction fences, and a memorial wall down the block.

Steve just points to a tall building. "There's Stark Tower."

Orpheus gives his hand a gentle squeeze. "Where your Tony lives? Or works? Or what?"

"He's back in California right now," Steve says. "He lives there when he's on the East Coast. He'll have places for all of us--I mean, all of the Avengers--when the construction is finished."

"Were you thinking of living there?"

Steve nods. "At least some of the time."

[golden_lyre]

"While you're working on things, or...?"

[thekidfrombrooklyn]

"When we need to be together, yes."

[golden_lyre]

He nods, thoughtful, digesting that.

"Those would probably be the best times for you to go back to Milliways," Steve says.

[golden_lyre]

"That wouldn't be likely to help."

[thekidfrombrooklyn]

"You'll be safer there."

[golden_lyre]

"Except that time won't pass, so when I come back, I will be in as much danger as before."

[thekidfrombrooklyn]

"Then go home," Steve says. "Use the bar to go home, and I'll come get you when the danger's passed."

[golden_lyre]

"You can't send me away every time there's trouble, lovely. And I wouldn't go."

Steve makes a frustrated noise. "If you stay," he says seriously, "then I'll be worrying about you instead of doing my duty, and then I won't be any use to anyone. Not you, not the team, not whoever's in trouble."
