Orpheus pauses outside his door and turns to smile at Steve.

"Well? You've got the key."

Orpheus tilts his head back, carding his fingers through Steve's hair.

"Tell me what you've been up to," he murmurs.

"Another twenty cities on the tour," Steve says. "And the production just keeps getting bigger. They're talking canons and fireworks when we get to New York."

"That should make for an interesting homecoming."

Steve chuckles. "I have no idea how I'm going to explain myself to the neighbors."

[golden_lyre]

"How did you explain yourself to people here?"

[thekidfrombrooklyn]

"I say I was part of a scientific experiment and this is the result.

"But the population of a bar at the end of the universe are more inclined to believe things like this, as opposed to Bucky's ma or our former landlady Mrs. Kostigan or the nuns at my school."

"Wouldn't the nuns be willing to write it off as a miracle?"

"Possibly," Steve says, considering it. "My old art teacher might even cry."

[golden_lyre]

"And you could tell the others...that the army was really good for you?" he suggests, smirking.

"Keeping it short and sweet may be the answer."

[golden_lyre]

"If you're confident enough, no one will question it," Orpheus offers.

"I hope so."

He's quiet a moment. "It's going to be weird to be there and not really be home. I don't have an apartment anymore. Most of my friends are on the front lines, and I haven't kept in touch with my extended family for years."

[golden_lyre]

Orpheus huffs out a soft laugh. "Yeah, I know the feeling."

Steve huffs too and kisses his chest. "Sorry. Of course you would."

"No reason to be sorry."

"All right." He lays his cheek on Orpheus's chest.

Orpheus strokes along his spine.

"It never gets any less strange, if you were wondering."

"Being alone?" He kisses Orpheus's chest.

[golden_lyre]

"Going home."

[thekidfrombrooklyn]

"I imagine not," Steve says. "We're neither of us the same men who left. Home changes and so do we, usually in different directions."

"Yes," Orpheus murmurs. "Exactly."

"Is that why you spend so much time in the bar?"

[golden_lyre]

"How do you mean?" Orpheus asks, frowning slightly, confused.

"Because going home is so strange."

[golden_lyre]

"I'm not home when I go back, though."
