Orpheus had dutifully eaten, if not as much as Steve wanted him to, at least enough to be able to say he was taking care of himself.

And after...well, upstairs had seemed like a good idea. Especially good considering this was the first time it was Orpheus who hadn't seen Steve in over a month rather than the other way around. He tugs Steve into the room with a smile, not willing to let go of him even for a second.

"It's enough of me that I'm not sure what else there is," Orpheus says softly.

After a moment, he shakes his head. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't...do this."

"Shouldn't do what?" Steve says quietly, brushing Orpheus's hair back from his face.

[golden_lyre]

"Guilt you into staying. I don't know why I am, really. I never do."

"Is that what this is," Steve murmurs, still playing with Orpheus's hair.

"Neither of us really know what we're doing here, do we?"

[golden_lyre]

"I don't know. I know I'm trying to get you to stay, and I know I never do that," Orpheus murmurs.

Steve gets that gentle, thoughtful look he often gets around Orpheus, and gently kisses his forehead.

"I want to stay."

[golden_lyre]

"Are you going to, then?" Orpheus asks, pulling back to look at him.

"Can I bring the record player?"

[golden_lyre]

"Of course," Orpheus says with a faint smile. "You can bring anything you like, lovely."

"Then I'm coming back." He has a faint smile, too, and he pulls Orpheus back to him. "I hate fighting with you. Can we not do it anymore?"

[golden_lyre]

"We can try," Orpheus says. "Though I do seem to keep putting my foot in it."

Steve presses his mouth to Orpheus's hair. "You make me uncertain. I don't like it. I don't know how to handle it."

[golden_lyre]

"What are you uncertain about?" Orpheus asks, curling an arm around Steve as if to keep him from going anywhere.

"Us."

He's quiet a moment.

"What we are. What I mean to you. What kind of future we might have."

[golden_lyre]

"I don't know what we are," Orpheus admits. "And I'm not even sure what you mean to me. Something. Something important. I just don't know what.

"And no one ever knows what kind of future they might have."

"Most people who're," he swallows, "together, they just assume they're have one, seems to me. And it's enough."

[golden_lyre]

"That's...difficult for me," Orpheus says quietly.

"Everybody leaves," he whispers.

"I know," Steve says softly.

"That's what makes me uncertain, I guess. You don't want it and I do. With you."

[golden_lyre]

Orpheus frowns. "You...think I don't want it?"

"I did until you said you wanted us to last. When I found out about the vampire I didn't know if I should believe you.

"And now I want to believe you again."

[golden_lyre]

"Steve...with the vampire...I let him bite me before I told you I wanted this to last.

"But wanting it to last isn't the same as assuming it will."

"Finding out the person you want to spend your life with has a death wish is not a pleasant experience," Steve says quietly.

"I think wanting something to last helps with the assumption that it will."

[golden_lyre]

"But that was before," Orpheus insists. "I..."

He shakes his head. "You're...giving me something to live for, here.

"Besides," he adds. "I'm not the only one taking risks."

"I know," Steve says and takes Orpheus's face in his hands. "I think I get it now.

"I may not be immortal but I'm pretty damn near indestructible. That has to count for something."
