[Milliways]: An American in Paris

Orpheus' flat in Paris is above a little boulangerie in the Latin Quarter, not too terribly far from Notre Dame. It's...very small, and that isn't helped by the musical instruments and half-finished, scribbled sheet music that are littered around the place. Everything is clean, just cluttered. It's a bit stuffy as well, though Orpheus has all his windows open.

As they step into the living room, Orpheus turns to Steve with a smile. "Bienvenue à Paris," he says.

"They have to. It's the only way most of them have to fight back."

"I think it's amazing."

"It's human nature."

"The better side of it," Steve says softly and sips his wine.

"The Trojans were like that," Orpheus says thoughtfully.

"They had to, wouldn't they? In a war that lasted ten years?"

[golden_lyre]

"Yes, that's what I mean. That's what humanity does. It goes on."

"We never would have made it so far otherwise."

[golden_lyre]

"Very true," Orpheus says as the waiter brings their appetizer.

Steve watches the waiter put down the plate.

"How do you eat this?"

[golden_lyre]

Orpheus picks up one of the pieces of crusty bread that came with the cheese and dips it into the cheese in demonstration.

"Just like fondue."

"...but I thought..."

He picks up a piece of toast.

"Oh."

[golden_lyre]

"You thought what?" Orpheus asks, popping a piece of the bread into his mouth.

"I thought it was another word for sex."

[golden_lyre]

Orpheus gives him a very confused look. "Why?"

"'Cause the only other time I've heard it used was Howard Stark asking Agent Carter if she'd like a late-night fondue. I think they're dating so I figured...you know."

[golden_lyre]

Orpheus laughs. "And you didn't think he was just asking if she wanted to get a snack?"

"Neither of them gave any hint it was about food. I even asked and she just ignored it."

[golden_lyre]

"Hmm...well, it's always possible it's their code for sex."

[thekidfrombrooklyn]

"Hm. Maybe so. Just odd of him to ask her about it while we were flying over Austria."

He eats some of the Camembert. "This is good."

[golden_lyre]

"Of course it is," Orpheus says with a grin. "It's French."

[thekidfrombrooklyn]

"Oh, of course," says Steve, smiling, and eats some more.

[golden_lyre]

"They know their cheese," Orpheus adds, shrugging.

[thekidfrombrooklyn]

"I never thought much about cheese or what there is to be known about it."

"That's because you're American, and your cheese is made of plastic..."
