Orpheus wasn't entirely sure the ring would work as a way for him to get to Steve's world, but he was going to give it a shot. If it didn't work, he'd explain it to Steve the next time they were both in the bar, and they could figure something else out.

His guitar slung across his back, Orpheus turns the ring on his finger and opens the door, pleased to find himself in Steve's apartment when he steps through.

Orpheus laces their fingers together as they walk.

Steve beams at him, and holds onto his hand as they climb the stairs to his apartment.

Orpheus stops at the door and kisses him.

Steve presses their noses together a moment, and then unlocks the door.

Orpheus smiles and steps inside. "So The Hobbit?"

"I have the dee vee dee." He carries their snacks to the kitchen. "I didn't want to watch it alone in case the battle scenes were too much for me again."

Orpheus follows him into the kitchen, leaning against the counter. "He was one of my mother's, you know."

"Who was?" Steve says, unpacking the bag.

[golden_lyre]

"Tolkien," Orpheus says, lending a hand.

[thekidfrombrooklyn]

"Really?" He smiles at the thought. "Because he was a storyteller?"

[golden_lyre]

"Mmhm. Epics," Orpheus agrees. "He told epic stories. Like Ovid or Homer."

"I love that." He gives Orpheus a quick kiss on his way to the cupboard to get a bowl for the popcorn.

Orpheus smiles, really being quite useless in the kitchen for the most part. "I met him once."

"What was he like?"

He has to pause a moment to read the instructions on the box of popcorn. "Microwave for 90 seconds" is still a complicated concept.

"Oddly serious," Orpheus muses. "A little gruff. Remarkably intelligent."

"That sounds about how I imagine him," Steve says as he gets the popcorn ready to pop. "The gruff old language professor."

"I thought he should have been a bit more...jovial."

[thekidfrombrooklyn]

"Why is that?"

He gets out classes and a wine bottle.

[golden_lyre]

"Because there's so much joy in his writing."

[thekidfrombrooklyn]

"Maybe it was the circumstances when you met him." He starts hunting through the kitchen drawers for a corkscrew.

[golden_lyre]

"Could be. He was at Oxford, and I did catch him just after a lecture."

[thekidfrombrooklyn]

"I'm sure he had his mind on other things that even you couldn't charm him out of." He grins at Orpheus and starts working the bottle open.

Orpheus chuckles. "My charm wouldn't have worked on him. He was...very much in love with his wife."

Steve laughs. "I wasn't even thinking about sex."

[golden_lyre]

"Neither was I, but my charm usually at least relies on desire."
